2023 Mazda 3 Hatchback: Review, Price, and Specs

The 2023 Mazda 3 Hatchback aims to compete with more premium vehicles in many ways, despite its pricing is comparable to other compacts.

Both the sedan and hatchback versions of the Mazda 3 are stunning, nimble, and versatile.

You can get all-wheel drive, however, it will require foregoing the excellent six-speed manual, as well as two four-cylinder engines, one of which is a punchy turbo.

The Mazda 3 is designed for those consumers who want a satisfying driving experience and want premium interior materials in their small vehicles.

As other compact vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and VW Jetta might appear more practical or have more brand recognition.

What’s New for 2023 Mazda 3 Hatchback?

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which was introduced as an upgrade last year and is now standard on the 2023 Mazda 3 Hatchback, gains a 5-hp boost to 191 horsepower.

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder now includes cylinder deactivation, which boosts city and highway fuel economy by up to 28 mpg and 37 mpg, respectively.

An optional all-wheel drive is now available on the mid-range Carbon Edition model. All trims now come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2023 Mazda 3 Hatchback comes in different engines, the first of which is a base 191-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder.

The front-wheel drive system is standard on this engine, but the all-wheel drive system is available on the Carbon Edition and Premium trims.

Only the most expensive trims come with a 250-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter engine. If front-wheel drive is chosen, the car comes with a six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic gearbox is necessary for the all-wheel drive system.

Only the turbocharged engine makes the 3 satisfyingly quick, despite the fact that all three engines respond readily to gas pedals.

We achieved a quick 5.6-second sprint to 60 mph when we tested the turbocharged engine.

On straight and twisting roads, both the hatchback and sedan provide a refined ride that feels composed.

For keeping much of the joyous to-drive character of the previous variant, we’ve praised the new Mazda 3 Hatchback.

It has a tight body feel, natural-feeling steering, and a comfortable ride that doesn’t overly punish riders on bumpy roads.

Fuel Economy

The new Mazda 3 Hatchback with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder got EPA ratings of 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, making it the most fuel-efficient Mazda 3.

With 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, the turbocharged hatchback with all-wheel drive is the least fuel efficient.

On our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, we tested an all-wheel-drive automatic-equipped sedan with the non-turbo 2.5-liter, which achieved an excellent 41 mpg.

We also drove a comparable hatchback that exceeded its highway rating by 2 mpg (34 mpg shown).

The 3 mpg (3 more than projected) was obtained from the front-drive stick-shift. Visit the EPA’s website for more information on the 3’s fuel economy.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The interior of the Mazda 3 hatchback was carefully constructed using high-quality materials. A range of desired characteristics is available for both body types, although the finest ones are linked to the trim level.

For example, the topmost trims come equipped with a head-up display, heated front seats, and leather upholstery.

Although, the seats and passenger amenities in the three sedans and hatchbacks are supportive.

However, because the curved design takes precedence over the line of sight, the two-box design has the worst rear visibility of a compact hatchback.

The Mazda 3 sedan, with its larger cargo capacity of six carry-on bags versus five hatches, is better for those who need more storage space in the back. With the rear seats folded, they each have 16 bags.

Infotainment

The Mazda 3 Hatchback, which will debut in 2023, is likely to have equivalent technology as the current model.

As a result, the car will likely feature an 8.8-inch touchscreen, eight audio speakers, two USB ports, Bluetooth, voice control, and HD Radio.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, mapping, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and satellite radio are among the optional features. A console-mounted rotary knob is all that is needed to operate the system.

A 12-speaker Bose stereo system and SiriusXM satellite radio are available as options, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Safety

Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and automatic high-beam assist are all standard on every Mazda 3 Hatchback.

Blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, a head-up display, rear cross-traffic warning, a surround-view parking camera, and Mazda’s traffic jam assist system are just a few of the optional safety features available.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites have more information on the 3’s crash-test results.

The following are some of the key safety features:

  • Pedestrian avoidance is also standard on automatic emergency braking systems.
  • Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assistance are standard.
  • Stop-and-go technology is included in certain models of adaptive cruise control.

Warranty

Mazda offers a conventional warranty program that can’t compete with Hyundai and Kia’s ten-year or 100,000-mile powertrain coverage for the three sedans and hatchbacks.

  • Three years or 36,000 miles are covered under a limited warranty.
  • Five years or 50,000 miles are covered under the powertrain warranty.
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance
