2009 Mazda 6 Review – The all-new 2009 Mazda Mazda6 is designed expressly for the North American market.
It seems that this market didn’t appreciate the trim dimensions of the previous 6, so Mazda made it larger in every dimension inside and out.
This means improved passenger room and cargo space, but it also requires some trade-offs in other areas, like better fuel economy but decreased performance when compared to its predecessor.

What’s New for the 2009 Mazda 6?
While there are a number of changes to Mazda’s mid-size sedan for 2009, perhaps nothing is as significant as its change in styling.
A number of other features have been improved or upgraded, however. For example, horsepower has increased from 186 to 187, and torque from 186 lb.-ft. to 187 lb.-ft., and fuel economy from 22/32 mpg city/highway to 23/33 mpg city/highway.
Also, automatic transmission shift paddles now come standard on Touring models (previously optional).
New features include an optional Sport Package for i Touring that includes a unique front grill with a lower lip spoiler in addition to 16-inch alloy wheels and tires, body-color lower door handles, and exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals.
Pricing, and Trim Levels
The new Mazda 6 is offered in 5 trim levels (i SV, i Sport, i Touring, s Sport,). The base price of $20.235 for a 2009 Mazda 6 with a manual transmission or $21.855 for an automatic is almost 3 times higher than what you could have paid just 5 years ago (which was about $7000 less). In 2002 you could get a base model 2.3L 2WD at a price of only around $16,000.
However, with all these bells and whistles, it’s easy to see that premium prices are just par for the course today and even average compact sedan buyers are paying at least double their 2002 pricing on average in today’s current marketplace.
Why Should You Buy One?
The Mazda 6 offers value that’s hard to find in its segment. The car’s base engine, a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder, is rated at 166 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque, it delivers smooth power across a broad range of revs without much vibration or harshness.
An optional 3.7-liter V6 ups that output to 263 hp, which is surprisingly strong even when paired with Mazda’s five-speed automatic transmission.
Best of all? This sedan gets 26 mpg on city streets – impressive for a mid-size luxury car. It comes standard with leather upholstery, air conditioning, and keyless entry for both driver and front passenger doors, cruise control is included, too.

Engine Performance
With a 2.5L four-cylinder engine, you’re going to get up to 165 horsepower. This is not bad for a mid-size car, but you may be looking for more in a Mazda.
Fortunately, there is an optional 3.7L V6 option that will give you 250 horsepower for highway driving needs.
You should note that most of these numbers are estimates as Mazda does not yet release any specific specifications on their website about the upcoming models for 2009 vehicles, it’s better to find out all of these details once they are officially announced by their company.
Fuel Economy

Interior, and Comfort
With a roomy interior, high-quality leather upholstery, and soft, pillowy seats that feel supportive without feeling too stiff, it’s easy to see how comfortable you are in your 2009 Mazda 6 Grand Touring.
If you’re looking for something to help keep your backside warm on those cold winter nights or hot summer days, fold down either of the rear seats and fire up one of two auxiliary heaters.
Both heaters sit behind your headrests so you won’t have to move them or lose any space if they aren’t needed.
The 2009 Mazda 6 may be larger than its predecessors, but it still delivers a sporty car with an extra dose of comfort.
Seats and Comfort
The interior is a masterpiece. The seats are perfectly contoured for a comfortable drive. There is plenty of legroom and head space for tall drivers as well as short ones.
The dashboard provides a great view of your speedometer, tachometer, fuel level, gear shift indicator, outside temperature, odometer/trip mileage indicator, and battery charge indicator in addition to an average mpg monitor.
The side mirrors give you an excellent view of the traffic around you. Even at high speeds, it is easy to see what’s going on around you.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Mazda6 has a built-in 9-speaker Bose sound system that sounds very good, with an excellent range between high notes, mids, and lows. Unfortunately, it’s not available in Sports models.
The infotainment system is controlled via an LCD touchscreen; there are some real perks here for drivers with multiple devices (e.g., Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay).
This is a welcome improvement over previous generations of systems that were little more than aftermarket stereos.
If you’re thinking about the 2009 Mazda 6 hp as a primary vehicle, look into these features before buying; they’re terrific additions to any car, and they only add value in terms of both convenience and safety.

Safety
To quote Edmunds, the 2009 Mazda 6 sedan carries a reasonably impressive list of the safety features standard on every model.
The Mazda6 earns five out of five stars in NHTSA crash testing. It also has a perfect five-star rating in front-impact tests conducted by Euro NCAP, as well as a four-star side-impact rating.
In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing, it earned top marks in frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
Further bolstering its safety credentials are its 18 airbags, including curtain airbags that protect front occupants’ heads from severe side impacts, seatbelt pre-tensioners with load limiters, antilock brakes with brake assist, and electronic stability control.
Warranty
The 2009 Mazda 6 comes with a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty that also covers normal wear items like brakes.
The remainder of a vehicle’s warranty is typically manufacturer-dependent (i.e. 5 years for most vehicles).
It’s important to remember that no matter what car you buy, your vehicle will depreciate rapidly in its first three to five years; think long-term when it comes to repairs.
Driver Controls
The 2009 Mazda Mazda 6 comes with plenty of standard driver-adjustable controls. We found them to be intuitive and easy to use.
These include easy-to-read gauges, automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and power windows in front as well as rear doors.
The steering wheel controls can also be used to operate on-screen audio system controls such as volume or channel selection, even if you don’t have an auxiliary input jack.
