2.0 Skyactiv-G engine is also very efficient and has proven to be very reliable. However, no engine is perfect and the Mazda 2.0L engine is no different.
In this article, we cover some of the most common Mazda 2.0 Skyactiv engine problems, along with general reliability.
Well, and we certainly didn’t keep our thoughts on this machine a secret until now. We truly believe that the Skyactiv 2.0 engine has above-average reliability comments. Some of them can get a little repetitive so be patient.
No mass-produced engine in the world is absolutely perfect, but the Mazda 2.0 is definitely one of the best. It does not suffer from major design flaws or various common problems.
As a small NA engine, servicing the 2.0 Skyactiv-G engine is also easy. Part of the reliability of the Mazda 2.0L Skyactiv engine depends solely on the luck of the draw. However, maintenance is a key component over which the owner has control.
Take good care of your Skyactive 2.0 – use quality oil, change fluids on time and fix problems when they arise. For the most part, if you do, you will have a useful and reliable experience with Mazda 2.0 engines.
Here Are Some Common Mazda Skyactiv 2.0 L Engine Problems
Some of the most common problems that often occur with Mazda 2.0 Skyactiv-G engines are:
- Low oil pressure
- Carbon build-up
We will cover the above topic in the rest of this article. However, this is a good time to add a few quick notes. The Mazda 2.0L engine seems to be very reliable so far.
We call it the most common problem for a reason. This does not mean that they are completely widespread and affect a large number of Skyactiv 2.0 engines.
On the other hand, when rare problems arise, these are some of the most common areas. We have never really experienced this situation, but there is not much to discuss when it comes to Mazda 2.0.
Therefore, in Part 3, we will only talk about some general reliability concepts. In any case, the Skyactiv 2.0 engine is definitely among the most reliable engines we have ever written about.

Mazda 2.0 Skyactiv Low oil pressure
Low oil pressure is probably the most common problem in Mazda 2.0L engines. However, the low oil pressure problem is likely to affect only a small number of Skyactiv engines.
It also mainly affects the previous Skyactiv-G 2.0 engine from 2012-to 2014. The oil pump is usually responsible for low oil pressure.
In particular, objects or foreign bodies are stuck to the oil pump’s pressure relief valve. Mazda issued a TSB to fix this issue.
In most cases, it seems to be a fairly minor problem as it causes only minor deviations from normal oil pressure. If this happens, it is unlikely to be a concern for long-term reliability.
However, this can become a concern if too much pressure is lost or the issue is not addressed in a timely manner. Operating with poor oil pressure for a long period of time can lead to premature wear.
Main bearings and connecting rod bearings usually take a lot of abuse when the 2.0 Skyactiv loses too much oil pressure.
It is unlikely that there will be any problems in the short term. However, bearing wear can lead to premature engine failure.
This is not to deter anyone as oil pressure problems are not very common and severe pressure loss is even rarer.
Symptoms In Mazda Skyactiv-G Engine For Low Oil Pressure
Symptoms that indicate a Mazda 2.0L engine is experiencing low oil pressure include:
- Check engine light (MIL)
- Code P0015 and/or P0524
Unfortunately, the Skyactiv-G engine does not have an oil pressure light on the dashboard. However, the computer will trigger the check engine light if the oil pressure drops too low.
Mazda calls the check engine light MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp). This is accompanied by DTC P0015 and/or P0524.
Replace Mazda 2.0L oil pump
If the 2.0 Skyactiv engine has a low oil pressure problem, Mazda recommends replacing the oil pump. They also suggest changing the oil filter and cleaning the oil pan.
Hopefully, this will help eliminate the possibility of the problem reoccurring when the debris needs to be removed.
Depending on the model, the birth lasts about 1.5 to 4 hours. The 2014 Mazda3 models are on the longer end of the lineup, while the 2012 and 2013 Mazda3 are faster.
The cost of replacement parts will also add up to several hundred dollars. Therefore, the Skyactiv-G 2.0 oil pressure problem is estimated to cost around $400-$800 to repair at a shop.
General considerations for the Mazda 2.0 Skyactiv-G
Well, in terms of known issues or design flaws in the 2.0-liter engine, there really isn’t much to debate.
Many modern engines rely on turbocharging for performance or simply get as much out of their naturally aspirated design as possible.
The Mazda 2.0 Skyactiv-G engine uses a lot of modern technology, but the power per liter is quite low.
That’s not a bad thing. That is the main reason why Skyactiv 2.0L is able to offer outstanding reliability and fuel efficiency.
Low oil pressure is really the only real issue we are addressing in this article. It’s still an uncommon problem, but Mazda has issued a service bulletin on the subject of low oil pressure.
Otherwise, the carbon buildup is a small price to pay for direct injection, which is a wonderful technology.
We could have encountered a third problem with the Mazda 2.0 engine, but we haven’t seen a large number of owners experiencing the same problem.
However, cars and engines use thousands of different parts from different manufacturers. Defects do happen from time to time and it’s rare that a car sees 10-15+ years and 150,000+ miles without at least one or two minor problems along the way.
The bottom line is – the Skyactiv 2.0 engine is not bulletproof and is 100% perfect. It’s an amazing machine all around. Regardless, it’s likely that as the early model age, more issues due to natural wear and tear will come to light.
Handling and Driving Impression
The Mazda CX-5 compact crossover isn’t the most comfortable of SUVs. Instead, they’ll just give you a springy ride with lots of body roll around corners, they’ll never make you remember why you loved driving in the first place.
The independent suspension from every angle is designed to roll less than the competition, except for the front. This contributes to the CX-5’s excellent sense of connection with the driver, which is much appreciated.
The CX-5’s steering is lacking in this regard. While relying on excellent damper tuning to filter out road imperfections without lulling you from the driving experience, this year’s minor improvements have improved ride quality while maintaining handling.
The steering isn’t very communicative, but it reacts quickly to input and drives more like a small hatchback than a high-riding crossover, as previously mentioned.
You’ll still feel like you didn’t give up your gearhead membership card the day you decided to get married when the ground stopped and the winding road forced you to swap your membership card.
However, in terms of braking performance, we don’t trust the CX-5. In the basic edition, it is very clear.
There were times when we felt insecure about the braking power of the 11.7-inch ventilated disc, although it seemed adequate.
Drivers will be much safer and have a much better driving experience in a car with a turbocharged design featuring larger 12.6-inch discs.
