The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the first of these vehicles to be offered completely electric, a tiny crossover SUV with big style and technology.

2022 Kia EV6

The i3 hatchback, which was first introduced in 2014, has been on the market for a long time, and we’re pleased to see it finally arrive. BMW’s first foray into the EV market is the BMW iX, which is stunning.

2022 Volkswagen ID.4
Last year, the ID.4 electric vehicle from VW was unveiled. It’s a bit smaller than the Tiguan SUV from the brand in terms of size.
The Tiguan and other tiny SUVs, on the other hand, offer an interior volume compared to the ID.4 due to their inherent design efficiency.
A large cargo area, full-time all-wheel drive, and a raised seating position are among the same qualities.
For the Volkswagen ID.4, there are a few adjustments. The ID.4’s maximum range is increased slightly on a full charge.
Depending on the trim level, the EPA expects the 2022 model to go 2-20 miles farther than last year.
The 2022 ID.4 has yet to be put through our real-world EV range test, but the modifications should only improve the vehicle’s competitive range.
A 2021 ID.4 Pro with all-wheel drive, for instance, achieved 272 miles on a full charge test. Other all-electric small SUVs with AWD have had similar results.

2022 Rivian R1S
The Rivian R1S SUV, which is one of the only three-row EVs available, is a compelling option for families who want to go electric. It will be the second production model from Rivian.
With a lower starting price and a larger towing capacity than the Tesla Model X, the R1S is aiming straight for it.
The 128.9-kWh battery pack that the EPA estimates is good for 316 miles of driving per charge is shared by both the R1S and the R1T pickup.
The R1S gets a lot of pep from its quad-motor powertrain, which produces 835 horsepower. Despite its size, the handling is surprisingly agile, and the ride is firm.
Another area where the R1S outperforms the Model X is off-road capability. The R1S can be raised up to 15.0 inches of ground clearance with an adjustable air suspension, which is standard.

2022 Kia Niro EV
The 2022 Kia Niro EV is the all-electric version of the gasoline-powered Niro hybrid, and there is also a plug-in hybrid Niro as well (both are reviewed separately).
A 64-kWh battery pack powers a front-mounted motor and provides an EPA-estimated range of 239 miles.
However, the Niro EV went 285 miles on a single charge in Edmunds’ real-world testing, which is one of the longest distances we’ve gotten from a reasonably priced EV.
Last year’s Kia Niro EV came loaded with a long list of standard features, and thanks to updates for the 2022 model year, it comes with even more.
Last year’s optional 10.25-inch center touchscreen is now standard, so effectively you get the big touchscreen on every Niro EV now.
It even comes bundled with a premium sound system and a navigation system. You’re getting an impressively well-equipped EV even if you pick the base EX trim.
2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV
The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is an all-electric small SUV based on the Bolt EV hatchback. It is a half-foot longer than the standard Bolt, with the majority of its expanded wheelbase increasing the amount of rear legroom by 3 inches.
Cargo space is about the same as the Bolt EV, with the EU’s trunk holding 16.3 cubic feet of cargo with the seats up and a maximum cargo volume of 56.9 cubic feet with the seats lowered.
According to the EPA, the Bolt EUV offers about 247 miles of range on a full charge, marginally less than the estimated range of the lighter and smaller Bolt.
Still, the Bolt EV’s range estimate is competitive with those of its closest rivals, the Nissan Leaf (226 miles), Kia Niro EV (239 miles), Hyundai Kona Electric (258 miles), and Volkswagen ID.4 (275 miles).
A dual-level charge cord is standard, which can plug into 120- and 240-volt outlets and can draw up to 7.2 kilowatts.
Using a 240-volt outlet, a Bolt EUV recharges at a maximum rate of 26 miles per hour, so bringing an empty battery to a full charge will take 9.5 hours.
Since not every household has an available 240-volt outlet, Chevrolet is partnering with Qmerit to provide complimentary basic outlet installation for anyone who buys or leases a Bolt EUV.
The Bolt EV’s onboard charger can draw a maximum of 11.5 kW if you’re using a dedicated Level 2 charger, which lessens the time it takes to recharge the battery to about seven hours.
Of course, the quickest charging solution is to use the growing network of DC fast-charging stations, which can add up to 95 miles of range in just 30 minutes.
Another notable thing about the Bolt EUV is that it’s the first Chevrolet offered with Super Cruise, General Motors’ hands-free driver assistance technology.
Super Cruise is superior to rival automated driving systems in many ways, but drivers need to be aware of the system’s limitations.
For example, the vehicle’s sensors can’t detect potential problems as far ahead as a driver can, so while a driver can identify signs of suddenly stopping traffic (e.g., cars in adjacent lanes suddenly slowing down), Super Cruise seems to purely study the movement of the vehicle in front.
It’s also slow to speed up when the vehicle in front leaves your lane. So just because Super Cruise performs better than most doesn’t mean it’s foolproof.
The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is a natural evolution of the Bolt formula. A more spacious interior and extra convenience and luxury features are the payoffs for the Bolt EUV’s slightly higher price.
2022 Mazda MX-30 EV
The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is kind of a big deal. Up to this point, Mazda has never had a fully electric vehicle in the marketplace.
Now, the MX-30 represents the brand’s first step into the world of EVs and what the company calls its “multi-solution electrification strategy.”
(Translation: “We’ve got more electric Mazdas coming, but they’re not ready yet.”) The MX-30 is a stylish introduction to Mazda’s forthcoming EV lineup, and sales began in California during the fall of 2021 with expansion to other markets in 2022.
As new EVs go, the MX-30, which is based on Mazda’s CX-30 small SUV, is modest in its offerings.
Its electric motor produces 143 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque, making it significantly less powerful than rival EVs.
The Chevrolet Bolt, for example, makes 200 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the MX-30’s 35.5-kWh battery pack will only power about 100 miles of driving on a full charge.
Even though 100-ish miles is enough for most commuters, it harks back to EVs built in 2015, not 2022. Most budget-friendly 2022 EVs crest 250 miles and are better suited for longer trips.
There are some upsides here. Like most other Mazdas these days, the MX-30 has a classy cabin and sharp handling. The cargo space is decent, too.
But considering the more capable competition, which includes the aforementioned Bolt and Bolt EUV, the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, Mini Cooper SE, and even the Tesla Model 3, we think the MX-30 will need some improvements before we can give it a full recommendation.

The 2022 Audi Q4 e-Tron is a tech-heavy electric crossover with the premium look and feels we’ve come to expect from the luxury automaker.
As the name suggests, the Q4 e-Tron sits squarely between the Q5 and Q3 SUVs in terms of length, but it provides passenger and cargo accommodations that rival the larger Q5 due to its space-saving EV foundation.
As a result, the Q4 e-Tron is easy to drive in the city and provides very practical levels of utility. Notably, it shares much of its powertrain components with the less expensive Volkswagen ID.4.
