Rick Hendrick was born on July 12, 1949, in Warrenton, North Carolina. He is one of three children of Margaret Ruth (née Campbell) and Joseph Riddick J.R. Hendrick Jr., a car dealer who owned several dealerships in Virginia.

Rick grew up around auto racing; his father raced moonshine before moving into stock car racing and sponsored drivers such as Junior Johnson and Cale Yarborough.
