2017 Mazda CX 5 Review: Price, Specs, and More

2017 Mazda CX 5 Review – The Mazda CX 5 has been around since 2012, and the vehicle continues to be highly popular on the market today. In fact, it’s considered to be one of the top compact crossover SUV vehicles out there.

There are a few reasons why so many people are drawn to this particular vehicle, including its sleek and stylish design as well as its powerful engine and excellent fuel economy.

Unlike some of its competitors, Mazda has not made significant changes to its car. However, we appreciate what Mazda has done because it worked with some unique features that might be overlooked by other brands.

These features include projector-beam headlamps, 17-inch wheels, and a metallic grille with dark chrome accents. Another appealing feature is a 4-wheel independent suspension for great handling and rides quality.

The cabin offers an option for leather seats along with great visibility through large windows on all sides. SkyActiv models of Mazda SUVs can increase fuel economy by up to 30 percent when compared to other vehicles in its class.

Even though there have been minor changes, they definitely make a difference in how enjoyable and fun it is to drive our 2017 Mazda CX 5 vehicle.

Engine Performance

The 2017 Mazda CX 5 has a 2.5-liter engine with 161 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.

While those specs may not be as impressive as some larger sedans or sportier coupes, they provide just enough power to allow you to accelerate quickly and merge into traffic when needed.

The torque output helps eliminate downshifting and makes light work of climbing hills. In fact, we’d say that for everyday driving, this car is about as much fun as you can have in a compact SUV without an oversized engine.

It still won’t match up against more traditional models, or even most other crossover SUVs, but it’s just fine for average driving conditions.

Pros and Cons

If you’re trying to decide between the 2017 Mazda CX-5 and its competitors, but still haven’t been able to make up your mind, you should check out this in-depth review that goes over some of the pros and cons of the car.

Among other things, we’ll take a look at its reliability, how it stacks up against its rivals, and whether or not it’s worth your money.

In the end, we hope this review will help you make an informed decision about your next car purchase.

Pros
  • In Mazda’s mid-size crossover, you’ll find some of what makes Mazda cars so appealing in general, that is, handling that keeps drivers feeling connected to the road, a zippy little engine that’s fun to rev for optimal acceleration, as well as an available technology package featuring standard satellite radio and an infotainment system with dual-zone automatic climate control. And like Mazda sports cars are known for, you can have all these things without sacrificing comfort. Another plus is safety; not only does a backup camera come standard on every trim level but there are also other high-tech safety features like Lane Departure Warning and Dynamic Stability Control. The Mazda CX 5 2017 is also pretty good off-road.
Cons
  • The Mazda CX 5 2017 has an MSRP of $27,945 for a base model that comes with just about everything you need to drive it (except air conditioning, cruise control, and a touchscreen) but no extras. If you want those things, and who doesn’t? You’ll have to step up to a Sport or Touring model, both of which cost an extra $1,250. That may seem like pennies in comparison to other SUVs on today’s market, but these are nickels and dimes we’re talking about here. The Mazda CX 5 is not cheap by any means.

What we liked

Compared to its closest competitors, Mazda’s CX-5 offers more cargo space in its small crossover. The Mazda CX-5 is also a lot cheaper than most of its rivals.

The Mazda is also fun to drive thanks to its handling and acceleration capabilities. What we didn’t like: There are some quality issues with the interior plastic panels which can rattle when you turn corners at high speeds.

What we didn’t like

The Mazda’s ride quality could be better, especially on bumpy surfaces; it feels as if you are riding on air. The car also didn’t come with a sunroof, an odd choice for an SUV.

We would have also liked to see backup sensors available on every trim level, which is not currently an option.

On top of that, we wish that Mazda had given us a standard touch-screen interface instead of one that is optional.

Verdict

The Mazda CX-5 is one of those rare vehicles that achieve success in every area. You get a car that is stylish, fuel-efficient has great handling, and is backed by a strong warranty.

In addition to all of these benefits, it’s affordable. No wonder it won Canadian Car of The Year in 2016.

While there are some areas where improvement could be made, they don’t interfere with your overall experience behind the wheel or when you’re searching for an auto loan to finance your purchase.

There’s just nothing quite like driving a Mazda! If you’re looking for your next vehicle, we encourage you to consider the Mazda CX-5, your life will never be quite as good without it!

With its sophisticated style, comfortable interior, nimble handling, good fuel economy, and low price, it’s no wonder that Mazda’s CX-5 is one of our favorite SUVs.

It doesn’t have any major flaws or deal-breaking issues in its design or execution. However, as with most products in today’s market, there are always compromises to be made.

The Mazda’s electric steering is well-calibrated but lacks a little feel at lower speeds; it also doesn’t offer much sportiness behind its wheel.

Overall though (pardon my pun), we’re really impressed with Mazda’s dynamic SUV and can easily recommend it for city driving, with a warning for those living in snowy areas about its all-season tires’ performance when roads get slick.

Conclusion

With its sophisticated design, engaging style, and state-of-the-art technology, the Mazda CX-5 2017 should satisfy even the most discriminating SUV enthusiast. 3,500 pounds of towing capacity means hauling a boat or a trailer has never been easier.
