We also provide some examples of the different things you can tow with each model’s towing capacity.

Data at a Glance For Mazda CX 5 2021
Engine Options: Engine options for the CX 5 haven’t changed much over the years and there are actually only three engine types for the life of the vehicle: 2.0L, 2.2L, and 2.5L engines.
The 2.2l engine was offered in 2018, 2020, and 2021 (so far) and is really the only engine to make an impact on the numbers.
The other two engines produce the same maximum power of around 2,000 pounds, but the 2.2-liter can pump almost twice as much (3,500 pounds).
2WD vs. AWD: The following table for all model year CX 5 shows 2WD and AWD configurations, but this doesn’t affect the total at all. This makes it easier to analyze the graph and consider one less variable.
Towable Weight: The average towable weight for all years (2017-present) for all CX 5 remains at 2,000 lbs. generally, but a different engine will be offered in 2018 and the two capacities range from 2,000 lbs. – 3,500 kg.
At first glance, the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 and SKYACTIV-G 2.5 have a lower capacity of 2,000 lb. and the CX 5 equipped with the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 engine has a capacity of 3,500 lb. So, in my opinion, there are only two capacities and no range.

Towing accessories
Now that you know your 123 cranes, let’s take a look at ABC safe cranes. There are five different classes of couplings, divided according to the nominal tensile force and the size of the receiving opening.
Since the Mazda CX 5 towing capacity is 2,000 lbs, all you need is a Class I (or light duty) tow bar with 1.25-inch mounting holes.
Although the towing capacity of the Mazda CX 5 requires only a Class I hitch, we always recommend the use of a safety chain when towing, whether towing is maximum or less.
The safety chain connects your towing drawbar to your vehicle and acts as a safety net if one of your towing devices breaks. You’ll need two of them, and we also recommend connecting them in a criss-cross (or X) pattern.
Your Mazda CX 5 comes with many tow cables pre-assembled. If you intend to tow a towing, you must complete the wiring before being legally permitted to tow it.
This allows your towing to mimic brake lights and change the signal on your Mazda CX 5 while driving.
If you’re hauling lighter loads, it might be worth investing in a sway control kit. Using the accessories in this kit will prevent your towing from rocking excessively on the road and make you and other cars on the road safer.

How Much Weight Can the Mazda CX 5 Towing Capacity?
If you’re considering buying the Mazda CX 5 towing capacity, you might be wondering how much weight it can tow. The answer, however, isn’t as straightforward as you might think, it’s not a simple this many pounds figure!
The Mazda CX-5 comes in two models, the front-wheel-drive CX-5 Sport and the all-wheel-drive CX-5 Touring.
The weight of your car
In order to determine how much weight your Mazda CX-5 can tow, you must first know what your car’s curb weight is. Find that number on your spec sheet, which Mazda includes on its Web site.
Do not rely on a third party to provide you with that number, as it may not be accurate. Once you know your car’s curb weight (the manufacturer’s specifications should include both numbers), head over to Mazda’s website and input those numbers into its Towing Capacity Calculator.
The calculator will then tell you if your Mazda CX-5 is capable of hauling that trailer or if you need another vehicle to pull it.
The weight of your trailer
In order to tow something, you’ll need a truck that’s able to move whatever it is that you want to pull. In order to determine what your trailer can safely weigh, you have to know exactly how much your trailer weighs.
Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy way for us to do that without being able to physically see and inspect your trailer, but we can give you some ballpark figures.
Most new trailers sold in America weigh between 2,000 pounds and 6,000 pounds, and so for our example, we’ll assume your new trailer weighs about 4,000 pounds.
The tongue weight
Tongue weight is a measurement of how much your trailer’s tongue is carrying. The amount of tongue weight will vary depending on whether you have one or two axles, if it has air suspension and what type of tires are on your trailer.
The rule of thumb is that 10% of the total weight should be resting on the tongue, which means that if you’re towing up to 1,500 pounds, your tongue should weigh at least 150 pounds.
If it weighs less than that, you may need to adjust your tongue jack (which raises or lowers the front axle and thus allows you to adjust hitch height) so that more weight can be put onto it.
Maximum tow rating – is it enough?
You may think your Mazda can tow as much weight as you need it to, but that’s not always the case.
Many modern vehicles are rated for a maximum amount of weight they can tow, with some even having different ratings depending on certain circumstances (such as with or without a trailer brake controller).
These ratings should be posted somewhere in your owner’s manual and on an information plate in your car.
However, not all owners bother to actually read their owner’s manual, so you may want to double-check these numbers at a dealer before attempting any serious trailer hauling.

Conclusion
The Mazda CX 5 towing capacity has a maximum tow rating of 3,500 pounds. While that number isn’t as high as some other vehicles on the market, it’s high enough to handle most daily driving chores.
This models of Mazda SUVs will still tow more than most passenger cars on U.S. roads today, so it’s more than capable of helping out when you’re in a pinch and need extra pulling power for something like a lawnmower or boat trailer.
With towing capacity like that, it would be hard not to give two thumbs up for Mazda and its CX-5!
