The MBUX Hyperscreen feature allows passengers to access the car’s media, navigation, and communication system through one massive touchscreen that spans the entire dashboard.

Every Mercedes-Benz car comes with its own operating system (OS), called MBUX, and the newest version has an intriguing new feature that you’ll probably love: the Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen.

The Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen made its debut at the 2018 CES in Las Vegas and went on to become the most hyped product of the convention.

While its $2000 price tag will likely keep it out of the hands of most car buyers, that hasn’t stopped Mercedes from touting it as the world’s first multimedia system completely based on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

What does this mean, exactly? Here are all of the details you need to know about the Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen so you can decide whether or not it’s right for you and your family.

A Closer Look at its Features

The Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen is packed with so many features that it feels more like a miniature tablet than your typical in-car entertainment system.

Integrated gesture controls and intuitive speech recognition allow you to interact with your car’s multimedia capabilities without taking your eyes off the road.

If you prefer to touch, swipe right through your customizable screens on an intuitive touchscreen display for a dynamic driving experience.

Even Siri and Alexa can be activated directly from your vehicle thanks to integration with Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

When placed in auto mode, lane departure warnings, as well as blind-spot assist functions, are supported by technology that takes visual information from surrounding vehicles and pedestrian crosswalks if needed.

First Impressions & User Experience

When we first saw the new MBUX screen and heard about its capabilities, we were pretty amazed. Then, when we finally got to test it out in person during a demo drive, our jaws hit the floor.

There are so many things that are great about the Mercedes MBUX update (and by extension, how it interfaces with Android Auto) that make it incredibly easy to use, which is what you want for any infotainment system.

Yet in no way does it try to be too smart for its own good, in fact, as highlighted in our video review above, one of my favorite bits about running Android Auto is how easy and intuitive it is on top of all its features.

How Does it Compare to Competitors?

Mercedes has completely changed the way that people interact with their in-car entertainment and they have done it in a way that keeps your eyes on the road rather than your phone.

With competitors like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you get a virtual representation of what is on your phone to be displayed through your car’s dash. However, you don’t get access to everything since they can take up too much space on your screen.

With the Mercedes MBUX manual, you get true integration that truly enhances your experience in an entirely new way by also including voice recognition technology so you are able to make calls without distraction.

If it wasn’t for how luxurious and high quality their products are known for being, I would even say it is actually too advanced.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Using A Smartphone With The Mercedes-Benz MBUX System?

Every system has its pros and cons, but it helps to highlight those features that you’ll get a lot of use out of, and those features that are just perks.

For example, I wouldn’t say using a smartphone with my Mercedes-Benz ML-Class is imperative. It’s convenient, and nice when my phone is close by but not something I absolutely need in order to use my car.

At any rate, here are some things you might want to know before deciding whether or not a smartphone is something you should invest in:

For starters, it means all your contacts will automatically show up in your car’s address book; if any of your friends have an Apple CarPlay or Android Auto system then their contact info can be synced automatically too.

Can I Use Apple CarPlay Or Android Auto?

The answer here is a bit more complicated than a simple yes or no. The real question is Can you use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

While many cars from manufacturers such as BMW, Audi, Ford, Honda, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Alfa Romeo will support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for at least some of their newer models by now, most new vehicles with touchscreen interfaces don’t come standard with either option.

Instead, you have to choose it as an optional feature from your dealer during vehicle configuration.

Additionally, there are other car brands such as Cadillac that don’t allow any mobile device integration unless you first upgrade your onboard system with a third-party solution.

Pros and Cons to Consider

The Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen is one of those technologies that is so far beyond anything else on the market that it’s hard to evaluate.

On one hand, we have something that makes Apple CarPlay Mercedes MBUX look like a crude joke. On another, we also have a supercomputer in our cars, which raises new concerns about safety and privacy.

Ultimately, no product is perfect; it all comes down to personal preference and how much value you place on certain attributes. And in some ways, I think that’s what makes technology so interesting.

It’s not just about deciding if you want technology X or Y, because both could be great, but figuring out what you really want out of your tech and choosing accordingly.

Should You Get the Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen?

Information about the Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen has been in the news quite a bit recently, and car aficionados are wondering if this technology will truly deliver on its promises or if it’s just hype.

To really know whether you should get the Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen, it’s important to consider both the pros and cons of the product.

Here’s what you need to know about both sides of the Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen argument before making your decision.

Pros
  • The Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen is an innovation from mercedes that uses voice control with AI.
  • It makes controlling your car as easy as having a conversation with your best friend, only you’re able to talk about something other than how long it takes them to get ready.
  • A great addition for those who use their smart phones while driving, it keeps our hands on the wheel instead of a smart phone screen.
  • The system uses so-called Attention Triggers that can determine when you are driving without even looking at it by picking up environmental cues like turning off music or not braking hard enough while approaching a red light.
  • This stops us from making mistakes without needing us to touch any buttons at all, which also reduces distraction while driving.
Cons
  • The new Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen is an ambitious piece of technology.
  • It is an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, dashboard screen, internet browser, music player, turn-by-turn navigation system and more in one screen.
  • The screen automatically rotates when you drive from portrait mode to landscape mode.
  • Not only does it rotate, but it also displays different modes for different purposes – like accessing navigation or entering your destination. For some drivers, these benefits outweigh all else.
  • The touch sensitivity of a smartphone has even been added into Mercedes’ own automotive system because other customers have found smartphones easier to use than touchscreens built into vehicles themselves.

How To Make Decisions?

Just because there are pros doesn’t mean that you should automatically buy a Mercedes MBUX hyperscreen.

Make sure you weigh all of your options before making any big purchases, even if it’s something as large as a vehicle. Here are some things to consider:

  • Is this a purchase that I can wait on? If so, hold off until you have more information or a better idea of what you want.
  • Will I use it enough to justify its cost? If not, don’t get it! It’s important to spend money only on items that will add value in your life. Be realistic about how much time and energy you’ll actually spend using your new Mercedes MBUX hyperscreen.
  • Can I find another way to do what my Mercedes MBUX hyperscreen does for me? If so, maybe there’s an alternative option that will work better for you!

What’s next for MBUX?

At CES 2018, Daimler showcased the latest version of their infotainment platform, which they are calling MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience).

Just like with most new things at CES, hyped words were used to describe it, and they called it a Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen, which is something I can get behind.

They also demonstrated how data would flow between your car and smartphone, and how voice control will be key in these modern vehicles.

Final Thoughts On The Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen

The Mercedes MBUX Hyperscreen onboard a new 2021 or Mercedes MBUX 2022 model is an impressive piece of technology that keeps getting better and more sophisticated.

It’s easy to look at all of its features and decide that you want it, but do you really need it? The answer comes down to what type of user you are and how you use your car.

If your daily commute has become tiresome, then being able to take in entertainment on a larger, crisper screen will be a nice perk.

And if your family enjoys taking road trips, then being able to control almost every aspect of your drive with voice commands can be helpful.
