Engine Performance

The Mazda 6 2022 has a 2.4L 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 185 horsepower and 250Nm of torque.

Which is coupled to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and an FWD drivetrain. The top speed is 220 km/h and the 0 to 100 km/h time is 8.1 seconds.

The petrol-powered version has a 6.5L/100km fuel economy, whereas the diesel version has a 5.6L/100km fuel economy, making it an excellent option for those looking for fantastic fuel economy and performance.

The engine is coupled to a six-speed gearbox that allows you to modify the gear ratios as needed, ensuring consistent power delivery across the range.

  • 6.5-liter petrol
  • Engine type: Inline-six
  • Power (hp): 227 @ 4,000 rpm
  • Torque (lb-ft): 224 @ 1,600 rpm
  • Transmission: Six-speed automatic with ECT

Fuel Economy

According to the EPA, the Mazda 6 sedan with a base four-cylinder gets 26 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway.

The 2022 model has an estimated 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, but we don’t know if the turbocharged variant’s greater torque rating will have an effect on its fuel economy.

On our 200-mile real-world route, the final Turbo 6 we tested achieved a C/D rating of 36 mpg, exceeding government highway estimates.

On that route, the base engine model we previously tested gave 37 miles per gallon (2 miles per gallon) compared to its EPA rating.

Interior, and Comfort

Interior, and Comfort

The cabin is polished and well-finished, with plenty of chrome work and shiny surfaces. However, the textures are a bit too simple for my taste, feeling more like plastic than leather or something more ostentatious. It’s not bad by any means but it could do with a little work on the detailing.

There’s good storage space everywhere – front seats have an impressive amount of room but lost some in the rear – while the central console has enough cubbies to store all your bits and bobs without breaking a sweat (or dipping into your wallet). There’s also a nice-sized hatchback that can easily swallow an overnight bag.

On the downside, visibility from the front is good but compromised from behind by tall A-pillars and a steep windshield.

And though there are plenty of adjustments for both driver and passenger, some could do with more rake, particularly in the rear, to make them feel as comfortable as possible when cruising long distances.

The driving position is quite comfortable, thanks to well-controlled wheel movement and adjustable seats that offer decent lateral adjustability, even if they’re not quite up to VW’s level for lateral adjustment.

The steering wheel also has a handy cruise control function with a Stop and Go function, making for quick and effortless parking maneuvers.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Infotainment system

The infotainment system is basic but functional, and the touchscreen display is clear and easy to read.

There are plenty of options for customizing the looks of your car’s interface, as well as adding third-party apps.

Our test car had a few pre-installed, including Mazda Connect, but you can also get ones that focus on fuel economy or performance monitoring.

The Mazda 6 central controller hub allows for quick access to all the various features and settings – including phone connectivity – while being housed in an intuitively designed cradle located just below the main screen.

Overall, the Mazda 6 infotainment system is functional and easy to use, with a good range of features.

However, there could be room for improvement in terms of aesthetics and overall design – particularly when compared with models from rival carmakers.

Safety

For the class, the 2022 Mazda 6 has a top safety rating. It received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which gave it excellent ratings in all five crash tests.

In the test results of the front and side collision, as well as rollover evaluations, the Mazda 6 received a perfect five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

While a rear vision camera, a head-up display, rear cross-traffic alert, advanced cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and automatic braking are available as additional features on the 2022 Mazda 6, no standard driver assistance systems are offered.
